Power and Order
In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, a group of boy’s plane crashes on a deserted island. They try and keep law and order, but soon fall into mayhem. Jack the choir boy was a dictator like Adolf Hitler. Both Jack and Hitler want absolute power, limit free speech, and use violence to maintain their power.
Jack and Hitler will do anything to have absolute power. Golding writes, “I ought to be chief”, said Jack with simple arrogance, because I’m chapter chorister head boy. I can sing C sharp” (Golding 3). Jack feels as though he is entitled to power. Hitler gained power by giving speeches. In the biography, “Brainy Quote”, Hitler gave a speech saying, “Germany will either be a world power or will not be at all” (1). This states that Hitler will gain by power by convincing people to freely give power to him. Jack and Adolf Hitler both want power and will even brainwash other to get it.
Jack and Hitler blamed others to take attention off of themselves. Golding writes, “He isn’t a proper chief” (Golding 3). Jack does not want others to notice his mistakes. By blaming Ralph for his problems, others see him as better leader. On the page “The History Learning Site,” it states, “Hitler blames Jews for all the misfortunes that had befallen in Germany” (2). The Jews were blamed for no reason and he used this method to take attention off of his actions. Jack and Hitler both take attention off of themselves and disguise it as blame.
Jack and Hitler limit free speech. Golding writes, "And you shut up! Who are you, anyway? Sitting there telling people what to do. You can't hunt, you can't sing…Why should choosing make any difference? Just giving orders that don't make any sense” (Golding 3). Jack is limiting free speech by not respecting the conch and degrading Ralph. In the article “Nazi Propaganda and Censorship,” it states, “During the spring of 1933, Nazi student organizations, professors, and librarians made up long lists of books they thought should not be read by Germans.” (4). Hitler limited free speech by censoring books and decreasing the knowledge of the German people. Jack and Hitler both went through great lengths to force censorship.
In conclusion, both Jack and Hitler want absolute power, limit free speech, and use violence to maintain their power. They kept their power by forcing violence and keeping control. Both enforce dictatorship among their people.
